Who we are

Sternmarkt is operated by Shane Robert Herbert (ABN 14 645 684 276), trading as Sternmarkt, in New South Wales, Australia. Questions about your information: hello@sternmarkt.com, or the contact form.

The short version

We collect what we need to run a parts marketplace: your email address to sign you in, a checked mobile number before you list or post a request, what you choose to list, and your messages. We don't sell your information, we don't show your email address or phone number to other people, and we don't use advertising trackers. We use Google Analytics to see how the site is used as a whole; in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland it runs without cookies. We count listing views, the words people search for and the models and series they pick, without recording who did it.

Your account

You sign in with a link we email you. There are no passwords. We keep your email address and, if you give one, a display name. Your display name is shown to the people you message.

Your mobile number

To list a part or post a parts-wanted request, you need a mobile number we've checked by text message. Twilio sends the code and checks that the number is a mobile. We keep the number and when it was checked. We never show it to other users. One number can be used on one account.

If you sell

Your public name and your town or city, region and country appear on your listings. Your postcode is kept private. If you sell as a business, we ask for the business name, registration number and website so we can check the business is real. We use them only for that check; they are never shown publicly.

Listings, requests and photos

What you write in a listing or a parts-wanted request, and the photos you add, are public once we've approved them. Photos are stored with Cloudinary. When you upload one we store a resized copy with its hidden data, such as GPS location, removed. If you give a chassis or engine number with a request, only a seller you're talking to about that request sees it. The cars you save to your garage are visible only to you.

Messages

Buyers and sellers talk through Sternmarkt. We store the messages, and the other person gets an email from a sternmarkt.com address telling them there's a message — never your email address. Messages may be checked automatically for attempts to take conversations off the site, and reviewed by an admin if a user reports a problem. We read a message when that check flags it, when a problem is reported, or to enforce our terms, and for nothing else.

Contacting us

When you use the contact form we keep what you write, your email address and a scrambled form of your internet (IP) address. The scrambled form lets us spot abuse without storing the address itself. Email to hello@sternmarkt.com is forwarded to our Gmail inbox.

Payments

If you pay to list or subscribe, Stripe handles the payment. We never see or store your card number. We keep Stripe's reference for you and a record of what you paid and when.

Keeping the site safe

The sign-in form, the contact form and the “Send code” button use Cloudflare Turnstile to check that a person, not a bot, is using them. See Cloudflare's Turnstile privacy information.

To limit abuse we count attempts by email address, account, phone number and internet address. We store those only in a scrambled form that can't be turned back into the original, and delete them after two days.

If we close an account for breaking our rules, we keep a scrambled form of its phone number and any business registration number, so the same details can't be used to open a new account.

Cookies and your browser

We use cookies to keep you signed in, to protect the sign-in and forms from forgery, and to remember how you like search results laid out (list, grid or compact — a preference with no identifier in it, kept for a year). A sign-in lasts 30 days. If you choose a currency to see prices in, a cookie remembers it for a year. So that a listing view is counted once a day, a cookie lists the listings you've looked at today, with no identifier in it; it lasts a day. Your browser also remembers whether the filter panel is open; that stays in your browser and isn't sent to us. Google Analytics sets cookies that let it tell one visit from another; they hold no name or email address, and we only look at the totals. If you're in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland, it sets no cookies at all. We don't use advertising cookies.

Who else handles your information

We use a small number of services to run Sternmarkt. Each handles your information only to provide its service to us:

Some of these are based outside Australia, so your information may be handled outside Australia, including in Singapore and the United States.

Who at Sternmarkt sees it

Only the people who run Sternmarkt, and only to run it: checking listings and accounts, answering support requests and dealing with reported problems. Phone numbers are masked on our admin screens. Every action we take on an account is recorded.

How long we keep it

People who registered interest before launch

If you registered on our holding page, your email address, what you were interested in and your country (if you gave one) are held by Resend. We use them only for launch news. Every email has an unsubscribe link. About 30 days after our launch announcement we remove everyone who hasn't asked to keep hearing from us.

Closing your account, and your other choices

To close your account, ask us: email hello@sternmarkt.com or use the contact form. You can also ask to see the information we hold about you, or to correct it. We'll answer within 30 days. We may keep what the law requires, the scrambled ban details above, and what we need to deal with an open dispute.

If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, tell us first. You can also complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (oaic.gov.au).

Sharing

We never sell your information, and we share it only with the services listed above, or when the law requires us to.

Changes

If we change this policy in a way that matters to you, we'll say so on the site and by email before it applies.
